Gentle Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning can feel like a lot. There is pressure to reset, declutter, do it “right,” or suddenly have energy that maybe isn’t there. For many of us, especially disabled folks and spoonies, this season can feel more overwhelming than refreshing. If that is you, you are not doing it wrong.
Here are some gentle ways to approach spring cleaning.
Start small
You don’t need to clean everything at once. Focus on a corner, a drawer, or one surface. Small steps count.
Honor your energy
Your energy and capacity matter more than any to-do list. Short bursts, frequent breaks, or skipping a day is okay.
Work in categories
Try a few clothes, a small stack of papers, or one bag at a time. It keeps things manageable.
Rest is part of cleaning
Sitting down, drinking water, stretching, or stopping completely are all okay.
Make it easier on yourself
Sit instead of stand, use tools to reduce strain, play music you like, or adjust light and temperature to feel comfortable.
Redefine “clean”
You don’t have to throw things away. Moving items around, making spaces easier to use, or making them feel softer counts as care.
Notice how you feel
Objects might bring up memories or old feelings. Take breaks, come back later, or ask for help if you need it.
Ask for help if it feels right
Body doubling, texting updates, or having someone virtually present can make the process lighter.
Cleaning doesn’t have to look perfect
It can mean accessible, functional, or just a little easier to move through your space.
Take care of yourself as you go. Rest when you need to, ask for help if it feels right, and remember that small steps matter. You are not alone, and even little changes can make your space feel easier and more gentle.
