Permission to Disconnect

Jenn Jones

In a world filled with constant news updates, social media alerts, and the digital noise that never seems to stop, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The headlines, the endless stream of updates, and the anxiety-inducing posts can take a toll on our mental health. It’s okay to admit: things are hard right now. The world feels uncertain, frightening, and sometimes it feels like it's falling apart. And if you need to disconnect for a while to protect your peace, please, give yourself permission to do so.

There’s no shame in turning off the news, logging off social media, or choosing to take a break from the digital world. Sometimes, the weight of everything happening around us can feel unbearable, and it's important to acknowledge that we don’t have to bear it all at once. Your mental and emotional well-being matters, and it’s not only okay but necessary to step back when the world feels too heavy. We can't pour from an empty cup, and if you find yourself drained by the constant flood of information, stepping away might be the best thing for you.

But rest doesn’t just mean quieting the outside noise. It’s also about creating space to collect ourselves. It's okay to have moments where you need to sit with your thoughts, process your feelings, and take care of your mind and body. We can help others, we can support one another, but it’s impossible to do that when we’re actively falling apart ourselves. We need to fill our cups first, to ensure we can give from a place of strength, not depletion.

I know it’s hard. It can feel selfish to disconnect when the world feels so fragile, but self-preservation isn't selfish. It’s essential. Remember, taking a step back isn’t about ignoring what's happening in the world; it’s about recognizing that your health, your peace, your sanity are also important. Just because you choose to turn off the news or social media doesn’t mean you’re abandoning the world. It means you’re allowing yourself the space to recharge, so that when you’re ready, you can re-engage with a clearer mind, a stronger heart, and a sense of stability.

In the midst of all this, finding community is more important than ever. It's through these connections that we can feel grounded, supported, and understood. If you're feeling isolated, or unsure of how to move forward, reach out to those who uplift you, or explore groups and spaces where people understand the unique challenges you're facing. You are not alone, and even in these dark times, there are people who are walking through this with you.

There are a lot of unknowns right now, and it’s okay to not have all the answers. You don’t have to have it all together to reach out, to connect, or to ask for help. The uncertainty is real, but so is the power of human connection, the strength in solidarity, and the importance of collective healing. Together, we can weather the storm, one small step at a time.

If you need permission to disconnect, here it is. If you need permission to take a break from the overwhelming flood of information, here it is. You deserve it. When you’re ready, we’ll be here, reaching out, supporting each other, and creating the community we need to heal, grow, and move forward.

Take care of yourself. You are worth it.
